25th International Passive House Conference - Successful & Inspiring

The 25th International Passive House Conference was broadcasted live from Wuppertal, Germany on September 10-12th, 2021. On September 14-15 was Online Conference, there were more than 60 sessions, hundreds of professional speakers, consultants, architects, scholars, exhibitors from all over the world participate in the annual events!

This year conference was cooperated with Nordhein-Westfale EnergieAgentur and the city of Wuppertal.The minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of the State of NRW - Mr. Andreas Pinkwart and the Mayor of the city of Wuppertal - Mr. Ume Schneidewind gave the insight speeches of the opening ceremony. The Vice-Chair of Working Group III of IPCC and Professor at the Central European University (CEU) - Ms. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz has given an inspiring speech on Climate Changes. Up to date, we all have experienced the increasing global heating, we should all take immediate action, especially in the architecture industry!

September 10-11th broadcasted from Wuppertal - Passive House Standard is all over the world!
September 10-11th broadcasted from the historical City Hall of Wuppertal in Germany. The conference has been separated into two parts, the first part was live broadcasted and the activities include, Opening ceremony, Two-days sessions, a Passive House Award, and 30 Passive House Anniversary. The two-days session has discussed diverse Passive House topics, from Highly efficient districts, Passive Public Housing, Summer comfort and cooling concepts, Ecological construction materials, Energy consultant for buildings in Germany, and Prefabricated retrofitting: The outPHit project. The two-days sessions have invited hundreds of speakers from all over the world to discuss Passive House. The 25th International Passive House Award : Find out amazing awardees

After postponing two years, the Passive House Award has been successfully hosted this year together with 25th International Passive House Conference. The organizer has invited the professional jury, including Principle and founding member of Handel Architects - Deborah Moelis, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra (ETSAUN) - Ana Sánchez-Ostiz, advisory board of Federal Environment Agency and the UNECE - Burkhard Schulze Darup, member of RIBA - Tom Wright,director of the Institute of Architecture and Technology at Tsinghua University - Yehao Song, Passive House Institute - Dragoș Arnăutu and Corinna Geiger. This year, we have received more than hundreds of excellent projects, after intensive discussion, the jury has selected 20 final projects. The awardees of the 2021 Passive House Award have been announced from Wuppertal, Germany on Friday, September 10, 2021. Passive House 30 Anniversary

This year is the 30 years of Passive House and 25 years of Passive House Institute! Since 1990 the first Passive House was built in Kranichstein, Germany, and today we can see how the Passive House Standard are implemented in all over the world. On 30 anniversary’s celebration, Passive House manager director - Jürgen Schneiderand Passive House senior journalist -Katrin Krämer has shared their valuable experiences with us. We also bring the cake to share the happiness with everyone at Wuppertal.

September 12th Passive House Building Tour - Wuppertal:
How to implement Passive House Standard

On September 12th, 2021,the Passive House Building Tour was guided by Passive House senior researcher - Susanne Theume and she explained with professional insight about the Passive House projects in Wuppertal. The tour introduces a single-family prefabricated house, a new extension of the school project,inner-city new building with residential and commercial use, and new student apartments.

September 14- 15 Passive House Online Conference
On September 14-15 was the second part of the 25th International Passive House Conference, a two-day session has attracted founders of Passive House experts to get together and discuss online diverse Passive House topics. On September 14th, Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner has given the speech about „The Future of Buildings: Technological Change to protect Climate and Wellbeing“. Furthermore, the sessions have discussed Ventilation and heating, International Passive House Project, Future prospects - communication and dissemination, Energy-efficient non-residential building, and Recommendation on how to implement: Passive House Standard. September 1 to September 16 Passive House Online Exhibition.
This year the Passive House Exhibition was hosted online and has attracted Passive House components from all over the world. This year exhibition includes SIGA/ Pro clima/ Rothoblaas/ Wolf/ GIH/ Joulia/ Meltem/ Pichler/ Smartwin/ Schöck/ SONNENHAUS INSTITUT E.V./Swissspace/ Technoform/ 1000WB. Apart from the online exhibitions, there are informative and diverse actives during the exhibition period, for example, Component Impulse Talk Session and Exhibition Tour. It aims to let the global participates understand well the high-efficient of Passive House components.

Online Press Conference
On September 15 Passive House Institute has hosted the online Press Conference and invited the global media. At the press conference, Prof. Dr. Feist has given a speech and refers that in 2021 the world can be divided into 2 polar parts. One is fully supported new development and new world, another is realizing the limitation of the resources and has deepened research on how to develop the limited resources and focused on energy-efficient implementation. In recent years, diverse renovation and retrofit projects have been aroused in both government and people attenuation. With the project, it can not only reach high efficiency but also save cost. Passive House Institute manager director - Dr. Jürgen Schneiders demonstrates reliable data and researches to prove the Passive House technology. It shows how Passive House can bring a Win-Win situation to the building sectors.

Today’s achievement of Passive House will firstly be thanks to Dr. Wolfgang Feist, who has put the Passive House theory into action and made the first experimental building come true.During the 30 years, he and the team have been dedicated in sharing the Passive House knowledge, from the first experimental building to the largest Passive House projects, swimming pool, tall building, factory etc. Until today, Dr. Wolfgang Feist is still dedicated to solving global climate changes and demonstrates how everyone can make energy efficient.You can find the whole Dr. Wolfgang Fest interview HERE

Passive House Institute is celebrating 25 years old this year as well! We’re very glad that we have our global partners who truly believe in Passive House standard and see how they share the Passive House knowledge everyday. From the beginning, we published the first Passive House Chinese book,cooperated on several projects in Asia, hosted an international conference in China and participated in diverse conferences in Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, etc. We feel honoured that You are one of us!

2021 Earth Day- Efficient: The first renewable energy

On April 22nd, 2021,le't repair the earth together with Passive House Insitute! We have been engaged in this global sustainable event for over 20 years. This year, iPHA has launched a brand new video-Efficient: The first renewable energy. The aim of this action is to emphasize energy efficiency. By using renewable energy efficiently, we can highly reduce the energy demand.

The United Nation’s IPCC highlights the substantial action needed to limit global warming. Currently, 35% of global energy consumption comes from the building sector alone. The operational stage is the largest contributor to carbon emissions, with the majority of this stemming from heating and cooling demand. Therefore, think #EfficiencyFirst!

The Passive House standard (or EnerPHit for retrofits) provides a pathway to meeting our climate goal.Passive House stands for comfort, health, sustainability and savings. As the name suggests, Passive House buildings make efficient use of passive heating and cooling sources. This means they are heated mainly from the sun and from heat by people and equipment. During the warmer months, strategic, passive cooling techniques such as night ventilation and shading keep Passive House buildings comfortably cool. This substantially reduces the need for active cooling.

Passive House Award

In the face of advancing climate change, energy efficient building is now important than ever. The "2021 Passive House Award" will show how the Passive House standard can be implemented in an architecturally sophisticated and versatile way. An international jury will examine the entries and judge them on criteria such as design, cost-effectiveness, innovation, energy supply and sustainability. The winners will be presented at an awards ceremony as part of the 25th International Passive House Conference.

Award Criteria:

The jury will consider the completed Passive House projects and the context they were designed and constructed in. An emphasis will be put on the architectural design, including all energy efficiency aspects. Cost efficiency will be considered in relation to local standards. Climate considerations, legal hurdles and other challenges will also be included in the evaluation. The ability to replicate a project is also important - in the case of neighbourhoods, for example, with regard to political requirements or financial incentives.

Submission Criteria:

The award has an international focus; all building types may be submitted. The competition aims to award prizes to particularly well-designed Passive House buildings and their designers.

Conditions of participation:

The project architect / designer should make the submission.
All buildings certified as Passive House, Low Energy Building or EnerPHit and in use before spring 2021 can participate.
Districts can participate even if they are still in the development phase. The decisive factor here is, above all, an integrated energy supply concept with a focus on energy efficiency. The project must also be registered in the Passive House database at: www.passivehouse-database.org.
All buildings that received an award in one of the previous Passive House Awards (2014 Passive House Award, Architekturpreis 2010 Passivhaus) are excluded from participation. The exact competition categories will be determined by the jury depending on the submissions.

Submission deadline:

The submission of entries is possible until June 01, 2021.

5th Shandong International Exhibition on Green Industry in China

This month we bring Passive House to 5^th Shandong International Exhibition on Green Industry in China. The Shandong Province, located at the eastern edge of North China, has been one of the leading provinces on building energy efficiently and nZEB (nearly Zero- Energy Building) in China. Our long-term partners, Qingdao Sino-German Eco Park, has invited us to demonstrate the Passive House knowledge and technology on the exhibition. Sino-German Ecopark & Passive House Institute

Dr. Kaufmann refers in the video that Ecopark has been long-term partners with Passive House Institute. In 2016 the Passive Hosue Techonology was the first project that passed the Passive House certification inside Sino-German Ecopark. The project does not only fit the Passive House Standard, but also is one of the excellent Passive House sample in China.

Furthermore, the first Passive House residential community is finished this year and successfully passes the Passive House standard as well. The projects includes 18 residential building and covers the land areas of 43707 m2. Through these years, PHI not only deepens the bilateral cooperation with Ecopark, but also requires solid Passive House knowledge towards China diverse climates.

Global Cooperation

This year, PHI colleageus and Dr. Kaufmann has received the invitation from NAPHN (North American Network) to share the certificated experience about Sino-German Ecopark. During the webinar, the projects has successfully arouse the scholars’interest. In 2019 October, Dr. Kaufmann and PHI colleague (Kuang Wei) participated “4th Shandong International Exhibition on Green Industry” in Shandong, China. Duirng the exhibition, PHI has great opportunity to talk with diverse experts and policy makers in China, and it allows us to realize that Shandong provinces has been dedicated a lot in Passive House techonolgoy.

Through the rich cooperations, we’re glad to see the excellent grow of Passive House in China. Many Cities in China do not only build diverse Passive Houses, but also launches supportive policies and welfare to develope green energy building and industry. We truly believe that building Passive House is the essential way to build the sustainable future.
